About Mo's Workshops

Encaustic Beginners
In this class you will learn about the history of encaustic, studio safety and how to prepare your own encaustic medium and paints. Mo will go through board preparation, fusing, how to create smooth and textured surfaces, and layering to achieve amazing effects with beeswax and resin.
There will also be discussion on how to set up a studio for working in encaustic, what things you will need and how to do it cheaply. You can expect to take home 4 completed pieces. Mo will impart her vast knowledge of encaustic and share with you loads
of tips and tricks for working in encaustic. This class will give you enough information plus a great worksheet with encaustic recipe and resource list so you can start to explore the exciting medium of encaustic.

Collage and Wax
You will learn how to use collage in your work. From papers to fibres to embedding things in your work Mo will help you achieve composition and colour using her encaustic techniques. Encaustic is one of the oldest forms of painting, with paint made from pure pigment or oil paints mixed with wax and resin. The mixture is applied hot, and then reheated to fuse the layers together. You'll be amazed at how simple it is to collage with wax instead of glue to incorporate papers, fabric and fibres. Don’t worry if you haven't tried anything like this before, the medium is very forgiving. I'll have lots of collage materials available for you to play with, and you can work in any style you choose. Just bring along an apron and if you would like to include any of your own drawings or collage materials please feel free to do so.  I can let you know if they will work with the wax.

Image Transfer
Learn  numerous image transfer techniques with Mo. Using carbon paper, charcoal, graphite, print outs, joss papers.  You can create your work on wax using your own printed images. There are so many ways to make image transfers with encaustic.  The image transfer process only uses water, and is therefore totally non-toxic. Mo will show you how to transfer your photographic images to wax, and what to do with them once you have.   We will also do easy transfers of your own drawings done with pencil, charcoal, coloured pencils, carbon paper and mark making media.
And for lovers of a bit of sparkle Mo will also demonstrate transfers using foil papers to add a bit of pizazz. This method is great for beginners and advanced students as well. Just bring along an apron and if you would like to include any of your own drawings or materials please feel free to do so.  Mo will let you know if they will work with the wax.

Encaustic Crackle Finishes
Encaustic crackle is a resist that you paint on to your wax to create the most beautiful organic shapes and patina in your work. It can be layered into your encaustic paintings to creating stunning effects that can mimic aged tiles or parchments.  We will also use oil paints to create that aged cracked paint look. Mo will teach you how to make your own crackle resists and how to get depth and interest by layering adn scraping images with crackles in your work. She will also demonstrate how to go over the crackle finish with pigment sticks and oil paints and foil rubs to create a delicate glaze of colour and how to use these versatile materials to fill lines and add depth to all of your paintings.
Be ready for some creative arson.

Encaustic Studio
Come to the studio and work on your own work but with the help of Mo close at hand if needed. If you haven't yet got the room to set up your own studio then this is for you. Mo can answer all your technical questions and provide help with composition and critique if required. Mo will be available to assist you.  Just bring along an apron and if you would like to include any of your own drawings or materials please feel free to do so.  I can let you know if they will work with the wax.

Paper and Wax
Working with paper and wax adds a new dimension to your work. Create works on and with paper using hand dyed and natural fibre papers. You can get your work off the wall and utilise the transparency that makes paper and wax so inspiring and beautiful.
Mo will show you how to use rusted papers, masking, stenciling, stamping, wax resists, photography and even an encaustic pen tool to create fine lines. Dipping, pouring and brushing onto paper will be covered also.
Just bring along an apron and if you would like to include any of your own drawings or materials please feel free to do so.  I can let you know if they will work with the wax.

Photo Encaustic
Learn how to combine your images with wax in Mo’s "Introduction to Photo Encaustic." Encaustic has been around for ages, but its application to photos has created a recent resurgence of interest among fine art photographers. Images are treated with beeswax mixed with Damar resin in a variety of techniques that add intriguing depth and a unique tactile quality. Create texture and depth and interest in your work. Using a variety of image transfers and different papers you can create different effects including overlays and layering techniques and the use of text within the work. Learn how to use shellac and sandpaper to create texture and interesting effects.

Beyond 2D Encaustic
Go beyond the 2d with encaustic and create 3d forms with Mo in her new exciting workshop. We will be using simple items to create mini 3d sculptures with encaustic.
Utilising handmade papers, cotton, silk, string and natural materials and many other items we will create beautiful forms with wax. We will learn how to dip, pour, mould and form waxed pieces.
Mo will also show different methods to attach the work to a board for display.

Working Large
In this workshop we will work a little large and in a more painterly way than before with encaustic (up to 61cmx61cms.)  Utilising many different techniques to build interest, colour and form.
We will build up from smaller boards  to a large piece or work on a diptych or triptych.
A variety of new techniques will be explored including layering transparent glazes to achieve luminosity. Mark making, sumi ink, powdered pigments and the use of pigment/oil sticks.
We will also learn how to work with an iron to create texture and interest in the work.
Mo will also show methods of combining encaustic with other mediums such as…. oil paint, pastels, charcoal, graphite, watercolor, image transfers, carbon.
There will also be techniques on leaving impressions and texture in your wax, working with pouring, marble dust, aerosol paints and shellac.

Setting up your encaustic painting space, working safely, mixing your own mediums and framing options will also be covered. Upon completion you will come away with my tried and true tips & tricks, sources of supply and a head full of new techniques, ideas and inspiration — plenty of information to continue your journey with encaustic!
Let your creative juices flow and get excited about working in a larger format!

Scissors Paper, Wax
Working with encaustic and paper and 3D elements is an exciting new technique. It is similar to working with encaustic on board but the wax does wonderful things to paper and there are many new ways to use paper and wax together including making 3D pieces, and incorporating wax in handmade books. You will use plaster cloth to create handmade books, along with found materials such as papers, natural elements, photographs, fibres and fabric.

There will also be sculptural work to create 3D encaustic pieces. You will be working with hotplates, heat guns, a sealing iron and electric wax pens to collage and also to paint and draw with encaustic on paper. You will be burning, bleaching, rusting and using some traditional techniques of ink resists and batik with wax. Encaustic processes can inspire artists of all genres from print makers to painters to fibre artists. There will be a way you can include this wonderfully organic process to your box of artistic tricks.

Plaster and Wax
working with different types of plaster and wax is a new way to work with encaustic. I have discovered so many ways to add excitement to your images.
We will use plaster of paris, plaster bandage and traditional venetian plaster to create works that look amazing.

The ability to add age and interest to your encaustic is exciting and interesting.

Waxy illuminations

In this beginner-friendly workshop, we'll be using wax-based paint on paper to create beautiful, glowing lanterns. Encaustic paint saturates the paper, making the paper stiff, water resistant and translucent – a great material for folding and shaping.
We'll cover several ways of decorating the paper, including using stencils, ink, encaustic paint, and image transfers.
We can decorate the paper before we apply wax or you can use the wax paint to create your pattern. The wax can also be used as a resist to create batik-style effects.
I’ll also show you collage techniques that allow you to incorporate stamped or found imagery.
Everyone will have the opportunity to work on up to three lanterns. All materials included. Feel free to bring your own rubber stamps and mylar stencils. For the collage component, feel free to bring your own one-sided images (laser-printed, photocopied, or bleed-resistant inkjet images work best – nothing that smears when wet!). For collage materials, the thinner the paper, the better – that way, you don’t lose translucency.

Testimonials

Workshop in Artist own studio
Hi Mo and Mark
The studio was so organised, well set up with equipment and you were both very generous with your knowledge and materials. There was so much to experiment and try out with this process of Encaustic wax; I didn't want to stop for breaks.   The whole day was very social and fun at the same time. I have to say, I came away feeling stimulated and, like I had achieved confidence in using this technique. Knowing that I can do a major project with unlimited ways of adding interest to the work.

Primrose Paper arts workshop
On Saturday and Sunday 11 and 12 September, Mo Godbeer presented a two day workshop on Encaustic Painting and Techniques to a delighted and very receptive audience of 11.
Mo, assisted by her 16 year old son Alex, commenced with a comprehensive run down on the basics and drip-fed the participants more and more techniques and effects over the two days. Words used by the group to describe the workshop included:
addictive, organic, luscious, well prepared, layered, fabulous, stimulating, fun, enlightening and generous, electric, comprehensive, informative and knowledgeable.
This extremely versatile mode of art making offered so many directions that the work produced in the studio was wildly broad and creative.  The skill set is quite basic, working on hard board the works are produced by layering a wax/resin combination adding colour, collage and mixed media, fusing after each layer.  The works build and build in texture and complexity; sometimes it is difficult to know when to stop.
Mo was extremely generous in the provision of materials and her mode of delivering information was inspiring.  She has been working with this medium for 5 years with exhibitions in Sydney, Arizona, California and New York.
After the success of this workshop it has been proposed to arrange an advanced session in the near future.
